In Her Voice Ep. 48: Jill Catherine on Authentic Self-Love

Jill Catherine, a woman of many expressions in the world, is a professional dancer and drummer, speaker, author, and educator, who helps others to integrate body-mind-spirit. Her work in the world is not just a job; it is an extension of her heart.

A seasoned communications professional since 2003, Jill has been speaking, educating and inspiring others on topics including eating disorders, body image, women’s issues, finding purpose, emotional intelligence, and life’s big questions. She has worked in corporate, non-profit arts, human services, and higher education sectors. Currently, Jill is the Spokesperson and Lead Warrior for Ophelia’s Place, a member of the Oiselle Muses, and the author of the recently published book, A New Body Consciousness.

An all-around athlete, Jill was a collegiate volleyball player and NCAA Final Four Finalist. She bridged into the world of cultural dance and drum arts in 2002, and has been studying in the styles of West African, Brazilian, Cuban, Indian, and Hawaiian, both in the states and abroad. Her movement is a unique blend of the traditions she studied with her own authentic expression.

Embracing all cultures and religions, Jill’s artistry centers around personal and global peacemaking, empowerment, love of self and body, and the understanding of our body as an instrument to be of purpose, service, and expression in the world.

Here are a few of the big topics we talked about:

  • What it means to be a “body-centered” person

  • A video of Jill's dancing and drumming

  • How Jill uses movement to connect with her inner voice and body and teach women how to do the same

  • Using forms of movement as an active practice of self-love

  • How to stay authentic through moments of our own shame

  • How to respond to negative thoughts about your body

  • The power of affirmations and intentions as a practice of self-love

  • Jill's book, A New Body Consciousness

In Jill's Voice:

In our body is where our head connects with our heart.”

Our body is our instrument to be in the world and to do what we are called to do.”

I listen to how my body wants to move.”

You have the power to choose a different thought.”

What could we be doing, expressing, living and loving if we stopped spending our energy focusing on changing our bodies?”
